3 Tips to Secure Your New Devices

Change your default passwords and factory-set configurations on your new devices

As the dust settles from the holidays and festivities, we’re finally getting a chance to explore our new gadgets and devices received as gifts (or purchased for ourselves). Whether it’s the latest Apple device or gaming computer, it’s crucial to be able to properly secure and configure your new devices. The rule of thumb is: If it connects to the Internet, then it’s vulnerable to attacks and your sensitive information can potentially be compromised.

Here are three steps you can take immediately after opening your new devices:

1. Change Default Passwords

Some devices are already enabled with default passwords to simplify the setup process for the consumer. However, those passwords can easily be found online. Replace the factory-set default password with a strong and unique password. Remember, it’s good practice to create a strong, unique password for every account and device you own.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

When you sign into a new device or account for the first time, you can enable Multifactor Authentication or Two-Step Verification—a process designed to provide additional security and to prevent your sensitive information from getting compromised. The most common types of Multifactor Authentication steps are a combination of:

• • A strong unique password, or a PIN.
  • A smartphone, or a secure USB key.
  • A fingerprint, or facial recognition.
